Carbon cycle
includes fossil fuel formation
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| photosynthesis | CO2 + H2O + sun --> glucose + O2 |
| respiration | Glucose + O2 --> ATP + CO2 + H2O |
| autotrophs/producers | perform photosynthesis and respiration |
| heterotrophs/consumers | perform respiration |
| decomposition | a form of respiration, returns C from dead organisms to atmosphere |
| herbivore | gets energy from producers |
| carnivore | gets energy from consumers |
| omnivore | gets energy from producers and consumers |
| fossil fuels | coal, oil and natural gas |
| petroleum and natural gas | form from plankton in the ocean |
| coal | forms from plants on land |
| renewable | can be created in a human life time (all animals and plants, sunlight, wind) |
| nonrenewable | can not be created in a human life time (fossil fuels, metals, rocks) |
| heat and pressure | convert dead organic materials into fossil fuels |
| anaerobic | lacking oxygen |
| sediments | fine dirt and soil which can cover dead materials and prevent decomposition |
