Ms Harvey's Sedimentary Rocks
| Term | Definition |

| Shale | clastic rock made from mud sediments |
| Calcite | mineral present in nonclastic rocks, fizzes when combined with acid |
| Erosion | moving sediment from one place to another by wind, water, or gravity |
| Deposition | putting sediment back down |
| Clastic | rock with sediments that originate on land |
| Sandstone | clastic rock made from fine to coarse grained sand |
| Nonclastic | rock with sediments that originate in the ocean from chemical or organic means |
| Gravel | large sediement, over 2 mm in size, pebbles/cobbles/boulders |
| Sediment | bits and peices of rock, mineral, plant, and animal remains |
| Coquina | nonclastic rock made of large shells |
| Cement | sediments glued together with minerals such as calcite |
| Silt and Clay | also known as "mud", smallest sediments sizes |
| Weathering | breaking apart of rock by either chemical or physical means |
| Fossils | animal or plant remains or the evidence of remains |
| Limestone | nonclasitc rock common to Virginia |
| Sand | sediment smaller in size than 2 mm but larger than silt and clay |
| Conglomerate | clastic rock made of rounded pebbles |
| Compact | sediments pressed together by the weight of layers above |
| Chalk | nonclastic rock made from microscopic shells |
