Ms. Harvey's Igneous Rocks

TermDefinition
Rock mixture of cooled and hardened minerals
Igneous means fire, cooled magma or lava
Molten another word for melted material
Coarse texture of rock that comes from slowly cooled, large crystals
Obsidian glassy extrusive rock with no crystals
Intrusive means cooled below the surface, from magma, cools slowly, large crystals
Mafic molten material with magnesium and iron
Pumice extrusive rock that is cooled on top of the lava from the foam
Fine rock texture that comes from quickly cooled, small crystals
Granite common extrusive rock, found on continents due to lower density
Felsic molten material that is compsoed of feldspar and silica
Basalt intrusive rock found on ocean floor due to its high density
Extrusive means cooled above the surface, from lava, cools quickly, small crystals
