Circulatory Lev1

QuestionAnswer
heart An organ made of muscle that acts as a pump to move blood around your body.
blood vessels The tubes that carry blood throughout the body.
blood The fluid that is pumped through the circulatory system, made of plasma, platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells.
oxygen A gas necessary for life. A reactant in the cellular respiration reaction that helps extract energy from glucose.
carbon dioxide A gaseous waste product in the cellular respiration reaction.
nutrients Necessary substances that are carried by the blood to all cells, in order for organisms to grow and survive.
cellular wastes Substances that your cells no longer need, and want to get rid of.
glucose A simple sugar that comes from breaking down carbohydrates into simpler molecules. The formula is C6H12O6
cellular respiration A reaction that occurs in ALL CELLS to turn glucose into usable energy. Oxygen and glucose are the reactants. The products are water, carbon dioxide and ENERGY. C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O → 12H2O + 6 CO2 + ENERGY
4 parts of blood Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets & plasma
red blood cells Cells in blood that carry oxygen, with the help of hemoglobin.
plasma The liquid part of blood (mostly made up of water) that carries everything else in blood.
tissues A group of similar cells working together
organs Special structures in a body made up of tissues. Each has a specific job or jobs.
atom The smallest unit of matter.
molecule It is made of 2 or more atoms held together by bonds, like O2 or H2O
element Substance made of only one type of atom, like C or Mg or O2
compound Substance made of 2 (or more) different types of atoms like H2O or C6H12O6
bonds The attractions (forces) that hold atoms together to make molecules. They contain energy!
