N112 - Insulin for unit 2 test

Insulin uses replacement therapy for Type I diabetes mellitus, for Type II when other measures have failed, or supplement during illness or surgery
Insulin actions facilitates the transport of glucose into cardiac & skeletal muscle, & adipose tissue, increases synthesis of glycogen in the liver, decreases protein & fat breakdown
Insulin side effects hypoglycemia, irritation at injection site
Insulin considerations monitor blood glucose levels frequently, asses for hypo/hyperglycemia, rotate injection sites
Insulin administration 30 min prior to meals, Humalog – 15 min before meals
