Unit 6C: Topo. Maps
Erosional Features Vocab. 8th Gr.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
erosional features | land forms on Earth that show evidence of the natural processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition |
erosion | the process by which water, wind, ice and gravity move sediments |
weathering | the mechanical or chemical processes that break rocks into smaller pieces called sediment |
deposition | the process of pieces of weathered rock (sediment) being dropped off in a new place by wind, water, ice and gravity |
satellite views | photos or images taken of Earth from space over time |
elevation | the height of the land above (or below) sea level |
topographic map | a diagram of land surface area that shows variation in elevation |
contour line | a line on a map that connects points with the same elevation |
index contour | a thicker (bolder) line marking every 5th or 10th contour line |
contour interval | the difference in elevation between two adjacent contour lines of a topographic map |
steep slope | contour lines that are close together indicate ... |
zero | the number value of elevation at sea level |
sea level | where all elevations are measured from; = 0 |
gentle slope | contour lines that are further apart indicate ... |
depression contours | hachure lines pointing inward show a lower area in a fairly flat surface |
hachures | marks on depression contours; look like "teeth" |
V-shaped contours | indicate a river or stream on a topographic map |
