Cells and Body Systems

TermDefinition
Nucleus the brain of the cell. It tells the other organelles of the cell what to do and when to do it. It knows this information because of DNA that is stored inside of the cell.
Cell Membrane a thin covering that wraps around the cell. It allows important things, like food, to enter and things the cells doesn't need to leave, like waste.
Cytoplasm a thick fluid that is between the nucleus and the cell membrane. All of the other organelles float around in the cytoplasm.
Ribosomes Small black dots called ________ are the protein makers of the cell. These proteins are important for the cells functions as they help it perform nearly all chemical reactions it needs. These proteins also make up the structure of the cell.
Lysosomes are small organelles that are ball-shaped. They help the cell break down the nutrients it needs, and the old cell parts that the cell doesn't need anymore. These are rare in plant cells.
Vacuoles are membrane bound sacs that are filled with a type of fluid. They store important things the cell needs like food. Animal cells have many small ______ while plants have one big _______.
Golgi Appratus The__________ processes proteins to be sent outside of the cell. This organelle is a system of many membranes. Before “shipping” the proteins, it will add compounds so that it won’t break apart.
Chloroplast absorbs sunlight using pigments. This is only found in the plant cell. The chlorophyll or the pigment that the ________ make gives plants their green color.
Cell Wall helps the plant stand up right. This goes around the cell membrane. This protects the cell but has pores so materials can enter and leave the cell. This is only in plant cells.
Mitochondria These are peanut shaped organelles that create power for the cell. They break down sugar to release many things including tons of energy. The number of __________ in a cell depends on how much energy is needed for the cell to work properly.
Endoplasmic Reticulum The _____________ is made up of membranes, like the Golgi apparatus. There are two types of _________, rough and smooth.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum is covered with ribosomes. These are normally found in cells that create lots of proteins.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum breaks down chemicals and toxic substances.
Microtubules are tubes that have proteins in them. They help support structures that are inside of the cell. They also are conveyer belts and move things around the cell.
Tissues are groups of similar and specialized cells. These make up organs.
Organs made of tissues. Preforms a specific task for the organ system it is in.
Digestive Sysetm is an organ system that helps break down your food for its nutrients. It is made up of the mouth, esophagus, liver, stomach, pancreas, villi, and intestines.
Circulatory System The ________ moves nutrients and oxygen throughout the body by pumping blood. Is made up of capillaries, veins, the heart, and arteries.
Respiratory System The main purpose of the _______ is to put oxygen into the body and take carbon dioxide out. It is made up of the mouth, nose, bronchial tube, lungs, alveoli, and diaphragm.
Nervous System Your _______ allows you to feel and move by sending signals around your body. It is made up of the brain, neurons, nerves, and spinal cord.
Muscular System moves the body using muscles that relax and tighten.
Skeletal System This system protects the organs and shapes the body. It is made up of your bones. This system is attached to the muscular system by tendons, which are a type of tough tissue.
Endocrine System The _________ controls all of the functions in the body that require energy. Made up of glands and hormones.
Excretory System The _______ removes wastes from the body. Made up of kidneys, urters, and bladders
Lymphatic System circulates a fluid called lymph
Integumentary System includes skin, fingernails, and hair.
Immune System defends the body from bacteria using antibodies.
Body Systems Work Together this is what all the body systems do in the body.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
