What is a chemical symbol? A one or two-letter representation of an element (Si, Ar, Mg, etc.)
What is a group? Elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table (Same thing as a family)
What is a family? Elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table (Same thing as a group)
What is a period? A horizontal row of elements in the periodic table.
What is a valence electron? One of the furthest electrons from the center of the nucleus, the ones in the outer shell.
What is a proton? A small, positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
What is an electron? A small, negatively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
What is a neutron? A small particle with no charge in the nucleus of an atom.
What is AMU? Atomic Mass Unit - A unit used to measure the mass of particles in atoms.
What is an atomic number? The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
What is the periodic table? A chart of elements.
What is atomic mass? The average mass of an atom.
The number of ______ and ______ in an element are equal. Protons and electrons.
To find Atomic Mass : Subtract the number of neutrons from the number of protons.
To find the number of neutrons : Subtract the Atomic Number from the Atomic Mass. (Round the atomic mass to the nearest whole number)/
