Composition of ocean

Questions about the composition of the ocean

QuestionAnswer
What is salinity? Salinity is the amount of salt found in 1,000 grams of water. It is used to measure ocean salinity.
Why are oceans salty and not freshwater? Because water evaporates, and the salt gets left behind. Over time, so much salt is left it becomes noticeable that there is a salty taste.
What is brackish water and where can you find it? Brackish water is a mix of salt water and fresh water, found where the two meet.
What is the ocean zone that no sunlight at all goes through? The deep zone, where most fish make their own light (bio luminescence).
What are the four criteria that scientists use to classify ocean zones? The four are: temperature, salinity, density, and the amount of sunlight it gets.
What are the three basic zones in an ocean? The Surface zone, the Middle zone, and the Deep zone.
There are mountain ranges underwater like there are on land. What are these called? Mid-ocean ridges.
What are the three regions that water can be put under? Tropical regions, Temperate regions, and Polar regions.
