Science Questions

Properties/Composition/Currents

QuestionAnswer
Can water be a solid, liquid, and gas? Yes.
What is cohesion? Cohesion is the attraction between two alike molecules.
What is adhesion? Adhesion is the attraction between two different molecules.
Does ice float or sink in water? Float.
Water is known as the universal solvent. What does that mean? This means that many substances dissolve in it.
When water is poured onto a surface, why does it form drops? The cohesive attraction is more powerful than the adhesive attraction making many, small drops instead of a thin spread-out film.
What is polarity? Polarity is when a molecule has opposite charges on the ends but the overall charge is neutral.
How many hydrogen and oxygen atoms are bonded to form a water molecule? Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.
What is the deepest part of the ocean called? The Mariana Trench.
What is the shallowest part of the ocean called? The Continental Shelf.
What does the pull of the moon's gravity cause? Tides.
What are underwater mountains caused by plate movements called? Mid-ocean ridges.
Where do plants that go through photosynthesis live in the ocean? On the ocean's surface.
When freshwater and saltwater meet, what is this called? Estuaries.
What three things affect seawater's density? Temperature, salinity, and pressure.
On average, seawater has how much salinity in it? 35 ppt.
What are the two types of currents? Surface currents and deep water currents.
What causes water to move to the right? The coriolis effect.
What are the large mounds of water and the flow around them called? Gyres.
How many gyres are there in the world? Five.
What are currents? Currents are cohesive streams of seawater that circulate through the ocean.
As the water temperature increases, what does density do? Density decreases.
Can ocean currents occur on both local and global scales? Yes.
The colder and saltier the ocean water gets, what increases? The density of the water.
