Properties/Composition/Currents

QuestionAnswer
What is the only substance on Earth that exists as a solid, liquid, and gas? Water
Which is denser- ice or liquid water? Liquid water
What is the positive charged molecule in water? Hydrogen
What is the negative charged molecule in water? Oxygen
The overall charge of water is...? Neutral
What is cohesion? The attraction between atoms with the same charge.
What is adhesion? The attraction between molecules that do not have the same charge.
How do fish survive in the winter? The top of the pond freezes, and the ice insulates the bottom of the pond to four degrees Celsius, so the fish don't freeze.
What are Earth's five oceans? The Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern Oceans

Name and five features of the ocean floor. Continental margins, Abyssal plains, Mid-ocean ridges, and ocean trenches.
What four things do scientists use when they classify ocean zones? Temperature, light, salinity, and density
What are the three ocean zones? The surface zone, middle zone, and deep zone.
Why is river water near an ocean salty? The minerals from the ocean blend into the river.
What are currents? Cohesive streams of sea water
What are currents caused by? Wind, gravity, and density
What are the two kinds of currents? Surface currents and deep circulation currents
What is a Gyre? A circular flow that is made up of currents that is steered by continents and the Coriolis effect.
What is the fastest, strongest, and deepest current? the Gulf Stream
How long does it take to go around the Gulf Stream? 10 years
How many Gyres are in each ocean? 2 in Pacific, 2 in Atlantic, and 1 in the Indian
What are surface currents triggered by? Heat and wind
