| Mineral | single, solid, inorganic element or compound |
| Moh's Scale | scale used to identify hardness of common minerals |
| Cleavage | breakage with smooth edges and flat sides |
| Ductile | property of metal that allows us to stretch it into thin wires |
| Gem | mineral that is used for jewlery because it is rare and valuable |
| Ore | mineral mined for a profit |
| Luster | a mineral's ability to reflect light |
| Density | mass per volume |
| Hardness | mineral's resistence to being scratched |
| Transparent | light passes through without being blocked |
| Opaque | light cannot pass through |
| Inorganic | does not orginate from a living thing |
| Color | easiest property to identify, least reliable |
| Translucent | some light can pass through |
| Malleable | property of a metal that allows us to shape it into flat sheets |
| Fracture | breakage with rough, uneven edges |
| Streak Plate | ceramic plate used to reach powdery inside of a mineral |
| Streak | powdery inside of a mineral, more reliable than outside color |
