| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How does ice make it possible for organisms to live in a lake during the winter? | It acts as an insulator and traps in the heat in the water. |
| In which state of water can water exist in? | All of them, Solid, Liquid, and Gas. |
| If you were to place drops of water on a counter, what would happen to them? | They would attract to each other because they are cohesive. |
| What does Cohesive mean? | Molecules of the same charge that attract to each other. |
| What does Adhesive mean? | Molecules of the opposite charge that attract to each other. |
| Why does ice float on water when ice is the solid form of it? | Ice becomes less dense than water and things that are less dense than water float. |
| Why do water molecules attract to each other? | Positive and Negative molecules attract and Oxygen is Negative and Hydrogen is Positive. |
| What would a picture of a water molecule look like? | 1 Negative Oxygen molecule with 2 Positive Hydrogen molecules attached to it. |
| Name the five Oceans. | Pacific, Atlantic,Arctic, Indian, Southern. |
| What are two sources for Earth's water? | Rain and Glaciers. |
| How does the water in Earth's oceans become salty? | Rivers and streams carry minerals to ocean basins. |
| Define Salinity. | A measure of the mass of dissolved solids in a mass of water. |
| What are the three regions of the continental margins? | Continental shelf, continental slope, and the continental rise. |
| What are the abyssal plains? | Large flat areas of the seafloor. |
| What are mid-ocean ranges? | Places on the seafloor where tectonic plates pull apart. |
| How are ocean trenches formed? | Tectonic plates colliding with pressure plates. |
| Define an Ocean Current. | A large volume of water flowing in a certain direction. |
| Define a Gyre. | A circular system of currents. |
| Name the five Major Gyres. | North Pacific Gyre, South Pacific Gyre, North Atlantic Gyre, South Atlantic Gyre, Indian Ocean Gyre. |
| What are Density Currents? | Currents that move water downwards. |
| What are density currents caused by? | Cold waters greater density. |
| What causes cold water in the Pacific and Indian Oceans to rise to the surface and get heated by the sun? | Upwellings. |
| Why does upwelling occur? | Wind blows across the oceans surface and pushes water away. |
| In the southern hemisphere, what clock direction do currents move due to the coriolis effect? | Counterclockwise. |
