Water quiz

A quiz on water.

QuestionAnswer
True or false: Water is the only molecule that can be found as a solid, liquid, and gas. True
What is the Coriolis Effect? When the rotation of the Earth causes water to shift direction.
What are the main five oceans? Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern.
Define Salinity. The mass of dissolved solids.
What zone of the ocean has the most plant life? The Surface zone has the plant life
List the four criteria points scientists use to classify ocean zones. Temperature, density, salinity, and amount of sunlight.
Why don't organisms underwater die when the pond freezes? The whole pond doesn't freeze, and the surface traps the heat below it.
What is the scientific name for water? H2O
Is Chloride from salt attracted to the Oxygen or Hydrogen in water and why? Hydrogen because chloride is negatively charged, and hydrogen is positively charged.
What is the difference between cohesion and adhesion? Adhesion is between different types of molecules, while cohesion is between the same type of molecule.
Is the density of ice higher or lower than water? It is lower.
Why is salt used to melt ice? Because it breaks up the particles and lowers the freezing point so it wont re-freeze as easily.
Define polarity. When one side of a molecule is positive, while as the other side is negative, and they make the molecule neutral.
Why do density currents occur? Because Ice forms, leaving salt behind, making the water much denser.
How do currents affect climate and weather? The cold water makes it much colder because of the sea breeze.
What clockwork direction do the currents curve to in the southern hemisphere? counter-clockwise.
Define what a gyre is. A circular system of currents.
What is a density current? When salt water pushes water from below.
What warms the cold water in the Great Ocean Conveyor Belt? The sun.
True or false: The Great Ocean Conveyor Belt doesn't go through all the oceans? False
Which currents are caused by wind? Surface current and Upwelling current.
What is the highest salinity allowed for brackish water? 17.5%
In the tropical region for salinity, what is the formula? As depth increases, salinity decreases.
What causes the water droplets to form? Cohesion between the water molecules.
