Earth's Atmosphere V

Earth's Atmosphere Vocab.

TermDefinition
Atmosphere The Earth's air which is made of gases, solids, and liquids; it also protects Earth.
Ozone Layer Layer of the Stratosphere that has a high concentration of ozone and it absorbs most of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation.
Troposphere The layer of the Earth's atmosphere that is closest to the ground; it contains 99 percent of the atmospere's water vapor, it is where weather and clouds occur, and is where humans live.
Ultraviolet Radiation An energy that comes to Earth from the Sun, can cause skin cancer and can damage skin, and it is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer.
Ionsphere A layer of electrically charged particles in the Thermosphere, and it absorbs AM radio waves in the day and reflects them at night.
Chlorofluorocarbon Groups of chemical compounds that is used in refrigerators and foam packaging, they can enter the atmosphere and destroy the ozone layers.
Radiation Energy produced by the Sun that is transmitted in the form of waves and rays. It also heats the surface.
Hydrosphere The watery layer of the Earth's surface, it includes water vapor.
Conduction Produced when molecules bump into each other.
Condensation The step in the water cycle when water vapor cools and returns to liquid form.
Coriolis Effect When the rotation of the Earth causes moving air and water to change direction to the right north equator or left south equator.
Sea Breeze When the cool air from the sea goes to land and the warm air from the land goes up or head to the sea.(During the day time.)
Land Breeze When cool air from the land goes to the sea and warm air from the sea go to land. (At night.)
Jet Stream Narrow belts of strong winds at high altitudes which blow near the top of the troposphere.
Convection Produced by heat being transferred by the flow of the material, the cold air would push up the hot air and this creates a convection circle.
