| water cycle | continuous process by which water moves from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back. |
| precipitation | rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
| groundwater | water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers. |
| tributaries | streams and smaller rivers that feed into a large river |
| watershed | the land area that supplies water to a river system |
| divide | a ridge of land separating one watershed from another |
| habitat | a place where an organism lives and obtains all the things it needs for survival |
| reservoir | a lake that stores water for human use |
| wetlands | a land area that is covered with water during all or part of the year |
| permeable | the characteristic of a material that is full of tiny, connected air spaces that water can seep through |
| impermeable | the characteristic of a material that has few or no air spaces that water can seep through |
| saturated zone | water filled area of permeable rock or soil below the water table |
| water table | top of the saturated zone |
| unsaturated zone | layers of rock and soil above the water table |
| springs | an area where the ground water bubbles up to the surface |
| aquifer | any underground layer of rock or sediment that holds water |
| artesian well | where water rises due to pressure within the aquifer |
| geyser | fountain of boiling hot water and white steam |
