| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| boiling point | is the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas |
| boiling point elevation | is raising the boiling point of a liquid solvent by adding solute |
| freezing point | is the temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid |
| freezing point depression | is lowering the freezing point of a liquid solvent by adding solute |
| dilute solution | is a weak solution |
| concentrated solution | is a strong solution |
| unsaturated solution | is a solution that contains less solute than it can hold at a given temperature |
| saturated solution | is a solution that contains all the solute it can hold at a given temperature |
| super-saturated solution | is a solution containing more solute than it can normally hold at a given temperature |
| solubility | is a solution’s ability to dissolve more solute |
| suspension | is a cloudy mixture in which particles settle on standing |
| emulsion | is a suspension of 2 liquids that don’t normally mix together |
| permanent emulsion | is an emulsion that does not separate on standing; the particles are smaller than the particles in a temporary emulsion |
| emulsifying agents | break up particles into smaller pieces so that they are small enough to stay mixed and form a permanent emulsion |
| colloid | is a mixture in which the particles are mixed but not dissolved |
