Figurative Language

TermDefinition
Similie A figure of speech that expresses a resemblance between things of different kinds (usually formed with 'like' or 'as')
Metaphor A figure of speech in with an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity
Personification The act of attributing human characteristics to abstract ideas, etc
Onomatopoeia Using words that imitate the sound they denotr
Hyperbole Extravagant exaggeration
Alliteration Use of the same constant at the beginning of each stressed syllable in a lome of verse
Idiom An expression whose meanings cannot be inferred from the meanings of the words that make it up
Irony Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs
Symbolism The practice of investing things with symbolic meaning
Imagery The ability to form mental images of things or events
