Figurative Language

| Similie | A figure of speech that expresses a resemblance between things of different kinds (usually formed with 'like' or 'as') |
| Metaphor | A figure of speech in with an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity |
| Personification | The act of attributing human characteristics to abstract ideas, etc |
| Onomatopoeia | Using words that imitate the sound they denotr |
| Hyperbole | Extravagant exaggeration |
| Alliteration | Use of the same constant at the beginning of each stressed syllable in a lome of verse |
| Idiom | An expression whose meanings cannot be inferred from the meanings of the words that make it up |
| Irony | Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs |
| Symbolism | The practice of investing things with symbolic meaning |
| Imagery | The ability to form mental images of things or events |
