humus The rotting plant and animal materials in topsoil.
fertile Soil that has the nutrients to grow many plants.
terracing A farming method used on steep hillsides to control erosion.
erosion The process by which wind and moving water carry away bits of rock.
strip cropping The practice of planting one or more crops between rows of other crops to control erosion.
contour plowing Plowing around a hill to reduce erosion.
soil conservation The saving of soil.
weathering The process by which rocks are broken down into smaller pieces.
preservation The protection of an area
conservation The careful management and wise use of natural resources
reclamation The repairing of some of the damage to an ecosystem.
succession The process that gradually changes an existing ecosystem into another ecosystem
