| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| weathering | the chemical and physical processes that break down rock and other substances |
| fracture | the way a mineral looks when it breaks apart in an irregular way |
| density | the measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume |
| texture | the look and feel of a rocks surface, determined by the size, shape, and pattern of a rocks grains |
| streak | the color of a minerals powder |
| deposition | process in which sediment is laid down in new locations |
| conduction | the transfer of heat between two substances that are in direct contact |
| sonar | a device that uses sound waves to measure the distance to an object |
| subduction | the process by which the ocean floor sinks beneath a deep-ocean-trench and back into the mantle again |
| shearing | stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions |
| tension | the stress force that pulls on the crust and thins rock in the middle |
| compression | the stress force that squeezes rock until it folds or breaks |
| fossils | any trace of an ancient organism that has been preserved rock |
| erosion | the process by which water, ice, wind, or gravity moves weathered particles of rock and soil |
| properties of minerals | crystal habit, cleavage, hardness, density, luster, streak, color, tenacity, magnetism, and taste. |
| the mountain ranges | a group of mountains that are closely related in shape, structure, area, and age |
| continental drift | continents slowly moved over earths surface |
| plate tectonics | the theory that pieces of earths lithosphere are in constant motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle |
| pangea | the continents were joined together in a super continent, or single landmass, about 300 million years ago |
| mid-ocean-trenches | form long chains of mountains that rise up from the ocean floor |
| deep-ocean-trenches | part of the ocean floor that sinks back into the mantle |
| sea-floor-spreading | adds more crust to the ocean floor |
| strike-slip-fault | a plate boundary where two plates slip past each other |
| transform boundary | a plate boundary where two plates move past each other |
| divergent boundary | a plate boundary where two plates move away from each other |
| convergent boundary | a plate boundary where two plates move toward each other |
