Reproduction & Dev.
Living Environment Packets 4 & 5
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Amniocentesis | the sampling of amniotic fluid to screen for developmental abnormalities in a fetus |
| Asexual Reproduction | produces genetically identical offspring from a single parent cell |
| Birth | the emergence of a baby or other young from the body of its mother; the start of life as a physically separate being. |
| Cancer | invasion & destruction of healthy tissue by uncontrolled division of abnormal cells |
| Cleavage | splitting or dividing of a cell during telophase |
| Cloning | making an exact copy of a cell or organism by the process of miotosis |
| Development | orderly sequence of events |
| Differentiation | cells will develop specific jobs and develop into specific tissues in the maturing organism |
| Egg | female reproductive structure |
| Embryo | early stages of development in organisms |
| Estrogen | produced by ovaries in the female and stimulates the development of female secondary sex characteristics as well as starting the thickening of the uterus lining in preparation for a possible pregnancy after the egg is released by the female each month |
| External Fertilization | fertilization which occurs outside the body of the organism |
| Fertilization | the joining of an egg and sperm to produce a fertilized egg called a zygote |
| Fetus | developing human from the end of the 8th week after fertilization until birth |
| Gametes | a haploid reproductive cell that unites with another haploid reproductive cell to form a zygote |
| Growth | development of an organism |
| Internal Fertilization | the male of the species inserts his sperm inside the female |
| Meiosis | produces gametes or sex cells |
| Mitosis | associated with asexual reproduction and the growth and repair of cells in sexually reproducing organisms |
| Negative Feedback Loop | reaction that causes a decrease in function due to a stimulus |
| Ovaries | produce female gametes or eggs and the hormone estrogen |
| Oviduct | fallopian tube that carries the egg away from the uterus |
| Placenta | combination of maternal and fetal tissue which allows for the exchange of materials with the fetus and mother |
| Progesterone | produced by yellow tissue called corpus luteum in the empty ovarian follicle (place in ovary producing and releasing the egg) -- this hormone maintains the thickness of the uterus lining in case fertilization occurs and development of a fetus occurs |
| Sex Cells | a cell responsible for transmitting DNA |
| Sexual Reproduction | produces offspring that have a combination of genes inherited from two parents sex cells or gametes |
| Sperm | male gamete |
| Testes | produces sperm and the hormone testosterone |
| Testosterone | produced by the testes in the male and stimulates the development of male secondary sex characteristics (like facial hair and deeper voice) |
| Ultrasound | A type of imaging technique which uses high-frequency sound waves to examine a fetus |
| Umbilical Cord | fetal structure containing blood vessels which allows materials to be carried between the fetus and placenta in both directions |
| Uterus | implantation and development of the embryo and fetus before birth occurs here |
| Zygotes | single cell formed by the union of egg and sperm |
| Haploid | one set of unpaired chromosomes (half the chromosomes) |
| Diploid | cell with two haploid sets of chromosomes (all the chromosomes) |
| Eukaryote | has a nucleus |
