6-3 Rocks and types

Rock types

TermDefinition
Igneous Rock A type of rock that is created by the cooling of magma or lava
Magma Melted rock underground
Crystalline Rock A type of rock that is made up of crystals
Intrusive Rock A rock that is formed underground by magma and takes longer to cool than extrusive rocks
Extrusive Rock Rock that is formed above ground by lava and cools very quickly
Coarse Grained Rock Rock that is made up of large pieces
Fine grained rock Rock that is made up of small pieces
Porphyritic Rock with a mix of large and small crystals; Ex.Granite
Glassy Rock that is created when lava flows and cools not giving the rock enough time to crystallize there for no crystals are made.
Vesicular Rock that is formed with air bubbles leaving holes in the rock
Felsic Rock that is rich with feldspar and quartz
Mafic Rock that is rich with Iron and Magnesium
Compaction The process in which the rocks are squeezed and the pore space of the rock is produced
Cementaion The process in which sediments are glued together minerals deposited by water.
Chemical sedimentary rock Rocks that form when the ions from dissolved minerals precipitate out of water because of changing concentrations of chemicals.
Organic sedimentary rock rock that forms from the remains of living things.
Clastic sedimentary rock Rock that is formed from different types of rock
Sorting The tendency for currents of air or water to separate sediments according to size
Angularity The way a rock is broken up while being broken by traveling downstream
Stratification The layering of sedimentary rock
Cross bedding Sedimentary rocks made from slanting layers
Ripple Marks Marks in sedimentary rock that is brought out of the action of wind water or sand
Mud Cracks Mud cracks form when muddy sediments dry and eventually crack
