Fossils

Study for Test

TermDefinition
Fossil traces or remains of living things of the past
Amber original remain-tree sap that has trapped an insect or small animal and hardened to become a rock
Casts rock fossil-when a mold fills up with minerals and creates a 3-D model of the organism
Carbon Film rock fossil-a carbon "stamp" of a plant or small animal *able to see the insides of the organism
Relative Age the age of a fossil in "relation" to another fossil (index fossil) or rock layer
Pre-Cambrian Time first segment of time *90% of the Earth"s life
Cenozoic Era the age of mammals *the era we live in
Periods segments of time that make up eras
Ice Cores cylinder samples of ice that can tell us about the past climate and atmospheric gases
Jame Hutton wrote the theory of Uniformitarianism
Igneous Rock rock made by volcanoes
Elements substances made from one type of atom
Original Remains fossils that contain the original parts of the dead organism
Tar original remain-oily, sticky, black material that can trap prehistoric animals
Petrified Wood rock fossil-when minerals enter a dead tree and change it to a rock
Law of Superposition the theory that states that the older rocks are deeper in the Earth than the younger rocks
Index fossils fossils used to find the age of other fossils *common, found throughout the world, found in the same layer of rock
Paleozoic Era the second era of time-age of reptiles
Eons largest segments of time
Epochs smallest segments of time, make up periods
Tree Rings used by scientists to find out what the weather and rainfall was in the past
Rock Cycle the process by which rocks continually change into other rocks *never ends
Metamorphic Rock rocks made by heat and pressure deep inside the earth
Compounds substances made of two or more different types of atoms
Ice original remain-when organisms are frozen in ice
Molds rock fossils-the hollow impression or shape of a dead organism *used to create a cast
Trace Fossils rock fossils-evidence of the organisms' existence *poop, nests, eggs, cave paintings, footprints
Sedimentary Rocks rocks made from sediments being compacted and cemented together
Geological Time Scale a scale that organizes the history of the Earth into intervals of time *each interval is separated by a major event like an extinction
Mesozoic Era era of the dinosaurs
Eras Eons are broken into these time segments
Environmental Fossils fossils that tell us about the past environments and climates *tree rings and ice cores
Uniformitarianism the theory that states: *the Earth is always changing *the same forces that change the Earth today, changed the Earth of the past
Minerals solid substances that make up rocks
WED weathering, erosion, and deposition
Mineral ID Tests color and streak, luster, cleavage and fracture, magnetism, density, acid test, hardness, fluorescence, crystal structure

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
