What are cells? The basic units of structure and function in living things.
What did the invention of the microscope make possible? IT made it possible for people to discover and learn about cells.
An instrument that makes small objects look larger is an microscope.
How many lens do compound microscopes have? 2
What kind of microscope did Robert Hook use and what did he first look at? Compound microscope and he looked at cork.
What kind of microscope did Anton van Leeuwenhoek use and what did he first look at> Simple microscope and he looked at lake water.
What is the cell theory? A widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things.
What did Schleidian conclude about plants? All plants are made up of cells.
What did Schwan conclude about living things? all living things are made up of cells.
What did Virchow conclude about cells. All cells come from cells.
Resolution is the sharpness of an image.
A microscope that uses a beam of electrons to examine a specimen is called an electron microscope.
Heredity is the passing of physical characteristics from parents to offspring.
Trait is the different forms of a characteristic.
Genetics is the scientific study fo heredity
fertilization is the process in which a new organism begins to form when egg and sperm join (yuck!)
Purebred is the offspring of many generations with the same trait
Genes are the factors that control a trait
Alleles are different forms of a gene.
Hybrid organisms had two different alleles for a trait
A dominant allele is represented by an uppercase letter.
A recessive allele is represented by a lowercase letter.
The large dark spot in the center of a cell is a nucleus
What does a nucleus hold? Chromosomes which have a DNA coil.
What do plant cells have that animal cells do not? Cell wall
How many nuclei does each cell have? 1
Are viruses called cells? No
What is the function of DNA? It gives you your specific characteristics.
How much of your DNA makes up who you are? 0.1%. 99.9% of your DNA is the same as everybody else's.
