Groundwater Recharge hydrologic process where water moves downward from surface water to groundwater
Confined Aquifer A aquifer that does have a confining layer.
Unconfined Aquifer A aquifer that does not have a confining layer.
Artesian well a confined aquifer containing groundwater under pressure.
Water table the level below which the ground is saturated with water.
Infiltration Liquid moving into the ground though the surface.
Percolation a liquid slowly passing through a filter.
Transpiration the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves
Evaporation The changing of a liquid into a gas, often under the influence of heat
Condensation the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid
Watershed / drainage basin an extent or an area of land where surface water from rain, melting snow, or ice converges to a single point at a lower elevation
Divide Area at the top of a hill or mountain where water moves to one side.
Perennial stream River or stream that flows all year
Intermittent stream River or stream that flows only part of a year.
Ephemeral stream River or stream that flows during or after heavy rain
Uplands an area of high land
Stream order a measure of the relative size of streams. Starting at one and only going higher when the same number meets.
Thermal pollution the degradation of water quality by any process that changes water temperature.
Stream flow the volume of water that moves over a designated point over a fixed period of time.
Dissolve oxygen (DO) the amount of oxygen dissolved in a body of water as an indication of the degree of health of the water and its ability to support a balanced aquatic ecosystem.
% saturation Water content or moisture content is the quantity of water contained in a material.
LOD (or LWD) Wood in a river with a minimum diameter of 4 inches.
turbidity a measure of water clarity
Surface run-off the flow of water that occurs when excess water from rain, meltwater, or other sources flows over the earth's surface.
Pool Still moving water in a river.
Eutrophication excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water, frequently due to runoff from the land.
pH the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a scale (1 - 14, 7 is neutral), lower values are more acid, and higher values more alkaline (basic).
Riparian area riparian area is the veggitation on the side of a river or stream
Random sampling Taking random samples. Not having a specific idea of where to sample.
Substrate a layer that underlies something, or on which some process occurs, in particular.
Rock weir low dam built across a stream to raise its level or divert its flow.
Rip rap Loose stone used to form a foundation for a water breaker or other structure.
Heath Trays The tray where fish eggs are first put and hatched.
Atkins cells Long narrow trough for fish.
Incubation unit Used for eggs to alevin stage.
Rearing tank Used for feeding the Fry (rearing means to raise the fish)
Salmonid a fish of the salmon family.
Header box Gives a good pressure for the hatchery (Located in the rafters)
