| water table | the level below which the ground is saturated with water. |
| zone of aeration | moist, but not saturated pores are full of air |
| permeability | the tendency of a material to let water pass through it |
| aquifer | permeable sediment and rock |
| aquiclude | impermeable layers; barriers to groundwater flow |
| spring | natural discharges of groundwater |
| hot spring | springs that the the discharge water is much warmer than the average annual temperature |
| cave | natural underground opening with a connection to Earth's surface |
| sinkhole | a depression in the ground caused by the collapse of a cave or by the direct dissolution of limestone by acidic |
| karst topography | a landscape formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes, dolines, and caves |

| stalagmite | mound shaped dripstones that are on the ground |
| well | holes dug or drilled into the ground to reach and aquifer |
| drawdown | the distance that the water table drops |
| recharge | the process of precipitation replenishing the water content of an aquifer |
| artesian well | artesian aquifer can spurt above the land surface in the form of a fountain |
