Taxonomy

Bio 11.

TermDefinition
Bionmial Nomenclature The way organisms have been classified over time, giving them a name in either greek or latin.
Biochemical Relationship Of or relating to biochemistry; involving chemical processes in living organisms.
Class A taxonomic group comprised of organisms that share a common attribute. It is further divided into one or more orders.
Embyrological Relationship It involves comparing the embryo with other animals that share the same habitat (i.e deserts, oceans, forests) to help taxonomists classify organisms.
Eukaryotic Cell A cell with a true nucleus; a cell with a nuclear membrane and organelles.
Evolutionary Relationship It means how two things are related with respect to their evolutionary descent. For example when talking about genes, orthology is a property of genes where two genes separated from their last common ancestor (LCA) by a speciation event.
Family In biological classification, a family is a taxonomic rank between order, and genus. A family may be divided into one or more subfamiles, intermediate ranks above the rank of genus.
Genus A taxonomic category ranking used in biological classification that is below a family and above a species level, and includes group(s) of species that are structurally similar or phylogenetically related.
Homologous Structure It's when very different animals have bones that appear very similar in form or function and seem to be related.
Kingdom Kingdom is a taxonomic rank that is composed of smaller groups called phyla (or divisions, in plants).
Order A taxonomic rank used in classifying organisms, generally below the class, and comprised of families sharing a set of similar nature or character.
Phylum The primary subdivision of a taxonomic kingdom, grouping together all classes of organisms that have the same body plan.
Prokaryotic Cell A cell lacking a true membrane-bound nucleus.
Species A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. The species is the principal natural taxonomic unit, ranking below a genus and denoted by a Latin binomial.
Sub-phylum A taxonomic category of related organisms ranking between a phylum and a class.
Taxonomy The branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms; systematics.
Taxon A taxon is a group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
