Earth Science Vocabulary 1

TermDefinition
Geology The study of the origin, history,structure and processes that shape the Earth.
Inner core A ball of dense metal and is a solid.
Outer core The only liquid layer that is between the inner core the mantle.
Mantle The thickest layer made of hot rock.
Crust The the thinnest layer that surrounds the Earth and is hard and rigged.
Plate Tectonics The theory that the Earth's outer layer is made up of plates which have moved throughout Earth's history (A set of jigsaw-like paces that slowly move on the Earth's crust)
Pangea Supercontinent; all the contents were one
Theory of continental Drift The belief that continents moved to the position they are in the present. The theory that the contents move slowly.
Divergent boudary Occurs when plates move apart.
Convergent boundary A place were plates collide
Transform boundary A place were place were plates slide past each other.
