Evolution Study Cards

TermDefinition
Homologous Structures Body parts have same basic structure; suggests common ancestor; whale flipper and arm
Variations Darwin noticed the members of the same species are different (variations), he did not explain source
Vestigial Structures No function; eyes of blind mole, appendix of human, snake hipbones; suggests common ancestor
Appearance of Life on Earth Inorganic --> Organic --> Self-replicating Molecules
Mutations Adds new gene to gene pool. Source of variation among organisms.
Spontaneous Generation Life from non-living. Pasteur disproved with flasks of broth.
Anaerobic Prokaryotes Bacteria that live without oxygen; first living things on Earth
Stanley Miller Designed a test that determined that amino acids and organic compounds could have formed on early Earth
Four Components of Natural Selection Overproduction, Competition, Survival of the Fittest, Variations
Overproduction Species produce many offspring to ensure that some are able to live and reproduce
Embryology Suggests common ancestor. Embryos of fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals have gill slits
Biochemistry Suggests similar ancestors. Share similar genetic codes, enxymes, proteins, etc.
Sources of Variation in Populations Mutations, meiosis (formation of gametes), and sexual reproduction
Control Changed in Gene Pool Natural Selection, Mutations, Migration, Isolation
Mimicry Resembles poisonous or bad-tasting organism or resembles predator or autotroph (plant)
Camouflage Blend in with surroundings
Isolation Population is seperated; can lead to Speciation (new species is formed) and Reproductive Isolation (can no longer breed together)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
