Chapter 1

TermDefinition
hypothesis is a statement of what you think will happen during an investigation.
observation is something you find out about objects,events,or living things by using your senses.
experiment is the use of scientific methods to test your hypothesis.
variable is something that can change in a test.
independent variable is one that you can control.
dependent variable changes when an independent variable changes. It is what gets measured.It is your data.
control group is a standard against which change is measured.
procedures are step-by-step instructions for completing a task.
data are information from which a conclusion can be drawn or a predication can be made.
precision is the ability to consistently repeat a measurement.
accuracy is the ability to make a measurement that is as close to the actual value as possible.
inference is a conclusion based on observation.
evidence are observations that make you believe that something is true.
model objects and ideas that represent other things.
survey questions that are answered by people.
sample to collect data.
experimental group the group that gets the special treatment.
control group The group that doesn't get the special treatment.
