Fossil Fuels & Sedimentary Rock
| Term | Definition |

| sedimentary rock | layers of rock formed by pieces of weathered sand, clay, and silt |
| inexhaustible resources | renewable resources that never run out |
| renewable resources | resources that can be remade in a reasonable amount of time |
| fossil fuels | fuels made from ancient plants and animals; coal, oil and natural gas |
| nonrenewable resources | cannot be made again in a reasonable time, such as fossil fuels |
| sediment | pieces of weathered rock, clay, sand and bone carried and deposited by water, wind and ice |
| natural resources | anything from nature that people can use |
| petroleum | an alternate term for oil and natural gas |
| compaction | the squeezing together of sediments under layers of rock over time |
| cementation | minerals contained in water that glue sediments together in new layers of rock |
