What is this drugs' purpose? Acts directly on spastic muscles & inhibits muscle contraction by preventing release of calcium in skeletal muscles.
What conditions is this drug used to treat? (3) 1.) Cerebral Palsy 2.) Spinal cord injury 3.) Multiple Sclerosis
What condition causes EXTREME muscle spasticity? Malignant Hyperthermia
What is the primary adverse effect that this medication causes & how do we assess? Muscle Weakness Assess by asking if they can pick up a pencil, exhibit difficulty tying shoes/brushing teeth, etc.
What labs should we obtain before & monitor throughout treatment? Liver function studies
When beginning treatment, it is important to start with a __________ dose Low
Do/do not stop taking this medication abruptly. Do NOT
Malignant Hyperthermia: Indication Rapid rise in body temperature! Sometimes as high as 106-107*F
Malignant Hyperthermia: Treatment (5) 1.) Stop taking drug first! 2.) Establish airway (oxygen: regular or intubate) 3.) Give Dantrium 4.) cooling blanket 5.) Tylenol (oral=conscious, IV=unconscious)
