average slope the slope, or gradient, between any two points on a map.
benchmark a marker in the ground indicating the exact elevation above sea level.
contour line line on topographic map that connects points on land having the same elevation.
contour interval the difference in elevation between two consecutive contour lines.
depression contour a contour line joining points of equal elevation within a depression.
false-coloring image a computer image that assigns different colors for each wavelength of light, each of which depicts a certain surface feature.
great circle a circle whose plane passes through the center of a sphere.
imaging radar radar system in which a signal is sent out and then "heard" echoing off Earth's surface, a method of remote sensing.
landsat a series of satellites.
latitude distance in degrees north or south of the equador
logitude the distance in degrees east to west of the prime meridian
magnetic declination the angle by which the compass needle varies from true north
map projection showing the curved Earth on a flat surface
map scale the ratio of distance on the map to the distance on Earth
meridians an imagionary 1/2 circle that runs in a north-south direction from the North Pole to the South Pole
parallels east-west circles around Earth, parallel to the equador
photogrammetry a way to determione the position and elevation of surface features from aerial photographs
remote sensing mapmaking done by gathering data about the land from above the earth's surface
side-looking radar method provides far more information about the surface than an ordinary radar echo
profile a line that shows the changes in elevation across a section of a topographic map
