SLS Bio12 Enzyme LM
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Activation Energy | the minimum quantity of energy that the reacting species must possess in order to undergo a specified reaction. |
| Biochemical Reaction | Chemical reactions taking plce in biological systems |
| Coenzyme | a nonprotein compound that is necessary for the functioning of an enzyme |
| competitive inhibitor | Competitive inhibition is a form of enzyme inhibition where binding of the inhibitor to the active site on the enzyme prevents binding of the substrate and vice versa. |
| enzyme | a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. |
| enzyme activity | A measure of the ability of an enzyme to catalyze a specific reaction. |
| enzyme concentration. | concentration of enzymes |
| heavy metal | a metal of relatively high density, or of high relative atomic weight. |
| induced fit model | induced-fit model A proposed mechanism of interaction between an enzyme and a substrate. |
| metabolism | the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life. |
| non-competitive inhibitor | Non-competitive inhibition is a type of enzyme inhibition where the inhibitor reduces the activity of the enzyme and binds equally well to the enzyme whether or not it has already bound the substrate. |
| pH | a figure expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale on which 7 is neutral, lower values are more acid, and higher values more alkaline. |
| Substrate | a substance or layer that underlies something, or on which some process occurs, in particular. the surface or material on or from which an organism lives, grows, or obtains its nourishment. the substance on which an enzyme acts. |
| Substrate concentration | By increasing the substrate concentration, the rate of reaction will increase due to the likelihood that the number of enzyme-substrate complexes will increase; this occurs until the enzyme concentration becomes the limiting factor. |
| thyroid | a large ductless gland in the neck that secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism |
| thyroxin | the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland, acting to increase metabolic rate and so regulating growth and development. |
| vitamins | any of a group of organic compounds that are essential for normal growth and nutrition and are required in small quantities in the diet because they cannot be synthesized by the body. |
