maltase breaks down maltose to glucose
hormones are proteins which bring about a response in the body
nutrition means how an organism gets its food and what type of food it gets
haemophilia is a condition where excessive bleeding occurs due to a faulty gene
cystic fibrosis a condition where the respiration system becomes clogged with mucus, due to a faulty gene
a balanced diet depends on age, gender and levels of activity
examples of protein include meat, poultry , fish and eggs
function of protein growth and repair
there are 3 types of carbohydrate, they are starch, sugar and fibre
examples of starch containing foods are brown bread and pasta
a good source of fibre is vegetables
fats are good for making cell membranes
vitamin C is found in Blackcurrants
lack of vitamin C causes scurvy
a good way is getting vitamin D is directly from sunlight
lack of vitamin D causes Rickets
lack of calcium causes osteoporosis
lack of iron causes anaemia
Iron is found bound to this substance in Red blood cells haemoglobin
To test for starch use iodine
to test for glucose use benedicts solution
To test for protein use biuret reagent
to test for fat use brown paper
if starch is present iodine changes from brown to blue black
if glucose is present benedics solution changes from blue to brick red
if protein is present biuret reagent changes from blue to purple
if fat is present it leaves a stain on brown paper called a translucent stain
water in the body acts as a solvent
body temperature is 37 degrees celsius
