8.3 Vocabulary Terms

TermDefinition
Pholem vascular tissue through which food moves
Xylem water and minerals travel in the vascular tossue
Pollen tiny structures that contain the cells that would later become the sperm cells
Seed a structure that contains a young plant inside a protective covering
Embryo young plant that develops from a zygote
Cotyledon the embryo has one or more seed leaves
Germination occurs when the embryo starts to grow again and pushes out of the seed
Root Cap protects the root from injury from rocks as the root grows from the soil
Cambium layer of cells which divides to produce a whole new pholem and xylem
Transpiration the process by which water evaporates from a plant's leaves
