Mass movement
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Soil creep | Down slope movement of soil under the influence of gravity. |
| Landslides | A very rapid movement of earth and rock (regolith) down a steep slope |
| Regolith | Loose material including soil and rock. |
| Mudflows | Moving rivers of rock, soil and water. They are the fastest forms of movement. |
| Bogbursts | A form of mudflow. Occurs when peat gets saturated with water. |
| Stalactite | Deposits of calcite from evaporation on the roof of caves |
| pillar | stalactites and stalagmites joined |
| Stalagmite | Deposits of calcite from evaporation on the floor. |
| Permeable | A rock that water can pass through |
| Clint | A block of limestone occurring naturally as a result of weathering |
| Grike | Cracks between the blocks of limestone (clints) |
| Joints | The vertical cracks in limestone |
| Bedding planes | The horizontal cracks in limestone. |
| Freeze-thaw | The break up of rock as a result of frost action |
| Carbonation | When carbon dioxide mixes with rain water forming a weak carbonic acid. It reacts with limestone and dissolves it. |
| Swallow hole | When rivers flow above limestone and dissolve the bedding planes and joints forming a hole. |
| Denudation | Occurs by weathering and eroison |
| Erosion | Breakdown of rocks and removal as a result |
| Weathering | Breakdown and decay of rocks that are exposed to weather. |
| Lahar | A mudflow that contains volcanic ash and rock. |
| Gradient Water content Human activity Vegetation | What are the four factors that affect mass movement |
| Igneous rock | formed as a result of volcanic activity. Hot molten magma cooled down. |
| Sedimentary rocks | Formed from the remains (sediments) other rocks, plant and animal life compressed and cemented together. |
| Metamorphic rocks | Previously sedimentary and igneous but changed by great heat or pressure |
| What rock is found in the Giant's causeway | Basalt |
| What rock is found in the burren | Limestone |
| What colour is basalt | dark grey to black |
| What colours can marble be | white, red, green or black |
| Earth is made up of three layers, what are these called. | Core, the crust and the mantle. |
| What is the instrument used to measure and earthquake | A seismograph |
| What is the scale used to measure an earthquake | Richter scale |
| Tsunami | When an earthquake under the sea a giant wave forms called a tsunami |
