CH.3 ROCKS

PRENTICE HALL EARTH SCIENCE

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 types of rocks? The 3 types of rocks are Igneous, Metamophic, and Sandstone rocks.
How are igneous rocks made? Igneous rocks are rocks formed magma or lava.
How are metamorphic rocks made? Metamorphic rocks are made when rocks go in the crust, melt, and compact.
How are sedimentry rocks made? Sedimentary rocks are made when small pieces of debris is
Can the rock cycle end? No. The rock cycle wont end, because rocks are continually melted into new rocks.
What is lava? Lava is magma that has reached the surface.
What does E.D.C.C stand for? It stands for erosion, deposition, compaction, and cementation.
What does metamorphic rock turn into at subduction zones? It turns into magma.
What are all rocks made of? Minerals are the building blocks of rocks.
Any rock can undergo any process to become any rock. How does an igneous rock become another igneous rock? Melting and then cooling.
. "E.D.C.C." is an acronym for which type of rock? Sedimentary rocks.
Why is the rock cycle important? The rock cycle is a continuation of rocks forming, erosion and reformation. Its forces have shaped Earth's surface for 4.5 billion years.
Can you recreate what the earth does-can you make rocks? Yes, we can make rocks. With hydraulic machines that compress the minerals into rocks.
Does the rock cycle make mountains? Yes, the rock cycle does contribute to the making of mountains. Some mountains are made of rocks. Magma is melted rock and when tectonic plates move the sometimes make mountains as they shift.
What is magma? Magma is made of melted rocks.
How are sediments made? Sediments can be formed in many ways, one of the most common ways is in rivers. The rocks rub up against each other and make little pieces of rock. This is why there is a lot of sediments and silt at the end of a river.
What are the rocks called that are made of lava or magma? The Igneous rocks of course!
What are the rocks called that are made of compacted sediment? That would be the sedimentary rocks.
What are the rocks called that are made of heated and squeezed? Metamorphic rock is the name!
Can we tell how old a rock is? Yes we can, sometimes rocks are found with the remains of creatures in them. They are called fossils. Theses fossils can have the age determined.
