Ch.4 EARTH'SRESOURCE

PRENTICE HALL EARTH SCIENCE

QuestionAnswer
What is a windmill? A windmill is a devies that converts wind energy into usable energry otherwise known as potential energy.
How does a windmill store energy? A windmill stores energy in several ways, one way is to store it in a battery, another way is through compressing air and having the energy bottle up.
What is point source pollution? Point source pollution is a type of pollution that has a trafficable source.
What kind of mining produces the least amount of pollution? In situ leach mining, is a great way of mining. It is the least polluting in the mining.
What is are the disadvantages to wind energy? The windmills that harness the energy can create a lot of noise pollution, another one is it can harm the wildlife. The wind is also unpredictable and sometimes needs a particular spot, generally the coast or on top of mountians.
What are the advantages to wind energy? The wind is free and with modern technologies it is making caputruing this energry more effiecent. It also does not create and release green house gasses or other pollutants.
What happens inside of a windmill? The wind turns the blades, the blades are connected to a larger gear, the large gear hooks upto the smaller gear, this generates a larger amount of power.
What is solar energy? Solar energy is when we harness the sun's rays and turn it into power, via solar panels.
What is tidal power? Tidal power is energy captured when the tide turns an underwater turbine.
What is geothermal power? Geothermal power is where they use steam from the earth to turn turbines.
What is hydrothermal power? Turns water and a dam that releases water and powers the turbines.
What are the risks of mining? The risk of mining are very large. There is a risk of cave-ins, explotions, and mechanical problems.
Why use these alternitave methods for power? With a deminishing supply of oil we need to change our means of getting power to support life.
Who uses the power? Everyone uses the power and since our oil is depleting. Soon it will be all electric cars among other things.
What are the risks of having air pollution? Some of the risks are the fact that when there are majorly polluted areas these people have health problems. Another reason is that the wildlife have a hard time surviving too.
What are the disadvantages to open pit mining? Open pit mining allows the polutants to rise out and pollute streams and local water ways, and the air can get some of the polluntants.
What happens when pollutants enter the water system? With polluntants in our water we will feel the impact with reduced potable water as well as food, the fish can be harmed as well.
What are the risks of having a nuclear reacter? The risk of having a nuclear melt down
What are the risks of putting a nuclear reacter on a fault line? With the nuclear reacter on a fault line it is subject to the earth's shifting plates and could explode.
What are the disadvantages to solar power? The sun is not always shining, so we are limited to when the sun's is shining.
