Ch 3 Rocks
Prentice Hall Earth Science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a rock? | A rock is any solid mass of mineral or mineral-like matter that occuras naturally as part of our planet. |
| What are the three major types of rocks? | The three major types of rocks are igneous, sedimentray, and metamorphic. |
| How do igneous rocks form? | Igneous rocks form when magma or lava cools and solidifies. |
| How do sedimentary rocks form? | Sedimentary rocks form when sediments are compacted and cemented. |
| How do metamorphic rocks form? | Metamorphic rocks form when other rocks are changed by heat, pressure, or fluids. |
| What is the rock cycle? | The rock cycle is the continuous process that causes rocks to change. |
| What powers Earth's rock cycle? | Interactions among Earth's water, air, and land can cause rocks to change from one type to another. |
| What is magma? | Magma is molten material that forms deep beneath Earth;s surface. |
| What is weathering? | Weathering is a process in which rocks are physically and chemically broken down by water, air, or living things. |
| What are sediments? | Sediments are weathered pieces of Earth's materials. |
| What are intrusive igneous rocks? | Rocks that form when magma hardens benath Earth's surface. |
| What are extrusive igneous rocks? | Rocks that are formed from hardened lava. |
| How do you classify igneous rocks? | Igneous rocks are classified by the two characteristics: texture and composition. |
| What is erosion? | Erosion is weathering and the removal of rock. |
| How do you classify sedmientary rocks? | Sedimentary rocks are classified into the two main groups clastic and chemical sedimentary rocks. |
| What is deposition? | Deposition is when an agent of erosion loses energy and drops sediments. |
| What is compaction? | Compaction is a process that squeezes or compacts sediments. |
| What is cementation? | Cementation takes place when dissolved minerals are depostied in the tiny spaces among the sediments. |
| What are the agents of metamorphism? | The agents of metamorphism are heat, pressure, and hydrothermal solutions. |
| What are hydrothermal solutions? | Hydrothermal solutions are water-based solutions that escape form a mass of magama. |
