Ch.3 The Rock Cycle

TermDefinition
Rock Any solid mass of mineral or mineral like matter that occurs naturally as part of our planet.
Igneous Rock A rock formed by the crystallization of molten magma.
Sedimentary Rock Rock formed from the weathered products of preexisting rocks that have been transported, deposited, compacted, and cemented.
Metamorphic Rock Rock formed by the alteration of preexisting rock deep within Earth (but still in the solid state) by heat, pressure, and/or chemically active fluid.
Rock Cycle The continuous processes that cause rocks to change.
Magma Molten material that forms deep beneath Earth's surface.
Lava Magma that reaches the surface.
Weathering A process in which rocks are physically and chemically broken down by water, air, and living things.
Sediments Weathered pieces of Earth materials.
Intrusive Igneous Rocks Rocks that form when magma hardens beneath Earth's surface.
Extrusive Igneous Rocks Rocks that form when lava hardens.
Porphyritic Texture Rocks wirth very different size minerals and experience different rates of cooling.
Granitic Composition Igneous rocks with the main minerals being quartz and feldspar.
Basaltic Composition Rocks that contain many dark silicate minerals and plagioclase feldspar.
Andesitic Composition Rocks with a composition between granitic and basaltic rocks.
Erosion Weathering and the removal of rock.
Deposition When an agent of erosion (water, wind, ice, or gravity) loses energy and drops the sediments.
Compaction A process that squeezes, or compacts, sediments.
Cementation When dissolved minerals are deposited in the tiny spaces among the sediments.
Clastic Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rocks that are made of weathered bits of rocks and minerals.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
