What is a nonrenewable resource? A nonrenewable resource takes millions of years to form and accumulate.
What is a renewable resource? A renewable resource can be replenished over fairly short time spans.
What is a fossil fuel? A fossil fuel is any hydrocarbon that can be used as a source of energy: coal, oil, and natural gas.
What are tar sands? Tar sands are usually mixtures of clay and sand combined with water and varying amouunts of black, thick tar.
What is an oil shale? Oil shale is a rock that contains a waxy mixture of hydrocarbons.
How do nuclear power plants produce energy? In nuclear fission, the nuclei of heavy atoms such as uranium-235 are bombarded with neutron. The uranium nuclei then split into smaller nuclei and emit neutrons and heat energy.
What is conservation? Conservation is the careful use of resources.
What is air pollution? Air pollution is caused by power plants letting chemicals into the air.
What is water pollution? Water pollution is when sewage is released into the ocean and our drinking water.
what is point source pollution? point source pollution is pollution that comes from a known and specific location.
what is nonpoint source pollution? nonpoint source pollution is pollution that does not have a specific point of origin.
what is Runoff? Runoff is the water that flows over the land rather than seeping into the ground, often carries nonpoint source pollution.
what are two advantages to solar energy? two advantages are the fuel is free, and it's non-polluting.
what is hydroelectric power? hydroelectric power is water flow turns turbines and produces power.
what is wind power? wind power is when there are windmills that truns by the wind to produce power.
what is geothermal energy? geothermal energy is harnessed by tapping natural underground reservoirs of steam and hot water.
how is petroleum and natural gas formed? petroleum and natural gas are formed by the remains of plants and animals.
what are some examples of fossil fuels? some examples are coal,oil,and natural gas.
what resources does land provide? some resources land provides are soil and forests, as well as mineral and energy.
