Unit 5: Adaptations
| Term | Definition |

| Trait | A characteristic or quality of an organism. |
| Population | Members of the same species that live in the same geographical area; may be distinctly different from populations living elsewhere, due to the spread of local adaptations within a population |
| Adaptation | A process by which a population becomes better suited to its habitat, and in which a genetic variation that provides an advantage to survive and reproduce generally spreads through the population. |
| Variation | A distinct feature, behavior, or physiology of the organism that occurs to individuals within a population or species. |
| Generation | All of the offspring that are at the same stage of descent from a common ancestor, for example, mothers and daughters representing two separate groups. |
| Natural Selection | Process of selection whereby favorable traits become more common and less favorable traits become less common in following generations. |
| Migration | Movement to a different geographical or climatic region where food is more available. |
| Hibernation | A slowed physiological state of an organism to survive long periods of cold temperature or reduced food supplies. |
| Selective Breeding | A form of artificial selection whereby deliberate breeding results in desired traits in plants or animals. |
| Stimulus | An action or condition that provokes a response. |
| Response | Any behavior of a living organism that results from an external or internal stimulus. |
| Homeostasis | The tendency of an organism or cell to maintain a balanced state so as to maintain health and function. |
| Fight or Flight | Physiological changes in the body due to a reaction to stress. |
| Phototropism | Response of a plant to grow toward or away from light. |
