|---|---|
| Aquifer | An aquifer is a body of rock or sediment that can store water. |
| Pororsity | The amount of open space in a set volume of rock |
| What's very porous? | Sandstone |
| Impermeable | Water cannot pass through it |
| What's impermeable? | Clay |
| Zone of Saturation | The layer of an aquifer in which the pore space is completely filled with water |
| Water Table | The upper boundary of the zone of saturation |
| Zone of Aeration | Holds soil moisture and air. |
| Capillary Fringe | Lower boundary of the zone of aeration |
| What does the depth of the water table depend on? | topography, permeability, rainfall, and human use |
| Recharge Zones | Water that flows back into an aquifer |
| Well | A hole that is dug below the level of the water table |
| How does a Cone of Depression form? | Forms where too much groundwater is pumped out from a well |
| How does an Artesian Well form? | Forms when a sloping layer of permeable rock is sandwiched between two layers of impermeable rock. |
