Vocabulary for Atomic Theory and Periodic Table

QuestionAnswer
nucleus the center core of an atom containing protons and neutrons
proton a small, positively charged particles in the nucleus of the atom
neutron a small particle in the nucleus of the atom with no electrical charge
electron a tiny, negatively charged particle that moves around the nucleus of the atom
atomic mass the average mass of all the isotopes of an element- made up f protons and neutrons
atomic number the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
isotope an atom with the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons from the other atoms of the same element
model a diagram, mental picture, mathematical statement, or an object that helps explain ideas about the natural word
periodic table a chart of the elements showing the repeating pattern of their properties
chemical symbol a one or two letter representation of the element
period a horizontal row of elements in the periodic table
group elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table; also called a family
Henery Mosley updated the periodic table to arrange the elements by their atomic number
Dimitri Mendeleev father of the periodic table, arranged the elements by their atomic masses
Democritus said atoms are small uncuttable pieces of matter
Earnest Rutherford discovered the atom has a nucleus and is made of mostly empty space
J.J. Thompson scientist who first discovered electrons
Niels Bohr proposed that the electrons move in circular orbits around the nucleus in the electron cloud
metals most of the elements on the periodic table, located on left and in the middle
nonmetals elements that are mostly gases, located on the right of the periodic table
metalloids elements with properties of metals and nonmetals
synthetic element elements that are created in a laboratory setting- the newest elements to be added
element key lists atomic number, element name, element symbol, atomic mass, and state at room temperature
