| reflecting telescope | Telescope where concave mirror used to magnify and reflect image. It can be smaller and have a higher resolution than other optical telescopes. |
| refracting telescope | Telescope where convex lenses used to focus and magnify image |
| optical telescope | Telescope that uses visual light |
| Space Stations | Artificial satellite, provides living quarters, work & exercise areas, all equipment and support for humans to live/work in space |
| Project Mercury | First stage of space program designed to put humans on the Moon. Put a person in space and orbiting the Earth. |
| Project Gemini | Second stage of lunar landing program. Two spacecrafts would meet and link in space |
| Project Apollo | The third, Lunar Landing stage of the NASA program to put humans on the Moon. |
| Rocket | A motor that can burn fuel without requiring air |
| Hubble Telescope | Optical reflective telescope placed in space by the Space Shuttle, trouble with the mirror when first launched |
| Electromagnetic Spectrum | Arrangement of electromagnetic radiation by wavelength |
| Radio Telescopes | Telescopes that collect and record radio waves. |
| Sputnik I | First artificial satellite, launched by Soviet Union |
| Artificial Satellite | A spacecraft made by humans that orbits another object. Ex. Weather Satellites, Space Shuttle, International Space Station. |
| Natural Satellite | A natural object that orbits another object. ex. The Moon orbits the Earth. |
| Observatories | Places for astronomers to view the stars through telescopes, far away from light pollution and the influence of atmospheric gases |
| Space Shuttle | A reusable spacecraft that returns to Earth and lands as a glider. It caries satellites safely into space in its cargo bay and allows astronauts to make repairs to artificial satellites in orbit. |
| Yuri Gagarin | The first human to travel into space, Russian cosmonaut. |
| Neil Armstrong | First man to step on the moon, in Apollo 11 |
| John Glenn | First American to orbit Earth |
| Columbia | First Space Shuttle, 22 years of service before reentry disaster |
| Challenger | First Space Shuttle disaster, teacher was one of the 7 crew members who died |
| International Space Station | Space Station in use today, launched in 1998 as a permanent research laboratory for international use |
| Space Probe | Spacecraft built and launched by humans, gathers information and sends it back to earth, does not orbit Earth |
