Lesson 1

Lesson 1 Which Animals Are Vertebrates?

QuestionAnswer
Why is a backbone made from many small bones? They allow more flexible movement than one long bone.
What is a vertebrate? An animal that has a backbone.
What is an amphibian? A vertebrate that starts life in the water and lives on land as an adult.
What is a backbone? A series of bones that runs down the back of some animals.
What is a fish? A vertebrate that lives in water and has scales, fins, and gills.
What is a reptile? A vertebrate that has dry, scaly, skin and lays eggs on land.
What are three traits of mammals? They usually have hair or fur, produce milk to feed their young, and have lungs to breathe.
What are the 5 traits of birds? They have feathers, lungs, wings, two legs and lay eggs.
How does a parrot muscles, feathers, and bones help it fly? Muscles help the parrot move its wings; feathers are light; some hallow bones make the parrot lightweight.
How are the bodies of mammals and birds alike? They are both vertebrates and have lungs.
How are the bodies of mammals and birds different? They are different because mammals have hair or fur, and birds have feathers.
How do parent birds take care of their young? Some parent birds feed the young birds until they are old enough to get their own food.
What are the 6 traits of fish? They have gills, scales, fins, narrow bodies, slime layers which help them move through water and live in water,
What are the bodies of most fish covered with? They have scales with slime layers.
What is cartilage? It is a material that is softer than bone.
What are the backbones of sharks and rays made of? The backbones are made of cartilage.
How do fins and a long, narrow body help a fish swim? Fins keep the fish upright and help it steer, and a long, narrow body makes it easy to move through water.
How does the way a bird breathes differ from the way a fish breathes? One animal uses lungs to breathe, while the other uses gills to get oxygen from water.
How does an amphibian change as it grows? The animal hatches from eggs in the water with tails and breathes with gills. Then they develop legs and lungs and lose their gills. As Adults they live on land.
How does the skin of frogs and toads differ? Frogs have wet, smooth skin, and toads have rough, dry, bumpy skin.
An animal lives in water, has fur, and breathes with lungs. Would you classify it as a mammal, a bird, a fish, or an amphibian? Why? Fish live in water, but fish have scales, not fur. Amphibians and birds can live in water, but neither has fur. i would classify the animal as a mammal. Mammals have fur or hair, breathe with lungs, and can live in water.
