| evolution | the process by which populations accumulate inherited changes over time |
| natural selection | the process by which organisms with favorable traits survive and reproduce at a higher rate than organisms without the favorable trait |
| adaptation | a characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment |
| mimicry | a superficial resemblance of one organism to another or to natural objects among which it lives that secures it a selective advantage (as protection from a predator) |
| camouflage | organism is indiscernible from the surrounding environment through deception |
| selective breeding | the breeding of organisms that have a certain desired trait |
| species | a group of organisms that can mate with one another to produce fertile offspring |
| common ancestor | ancestral organisms shared by two or more descendent lineages |
| speciation | the process by which two population of the same species become so different that they can no longer be interbred |
| theory | statements or models that have been tested and confirmed many times |
| Theory of Evolution | the process where organisms have changed over time through the process of natural selection |
| fossils | the remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past that have been preserved in rock |
| relative dating | dating fossils based on their location in the earth |
| absolute dating | determines the age of the fossil in year by using the method of carbon dating; gives a number |
| homologous structures | same structure, different function |
| vestigial organs | seemingly functionless parts; example ostrich wings |
