| Planet | A planet is an object that orbits the sun, is large enough to have become rounded by its own gravity and has cleared the area of its orbit. |

| Comet | A cool mixture of dust and ice that gives up a long trail of light as it approaches the sun |
| Star | A giant ball of hot gas |
| Constellation | Constellation is a pattern or froup of stars that people imagined to represent a figte, animal, or object |
| Axis | The imaginary line that passes through Earth's center and the North and South poles is the Earth's axis |
| Rotation | The spinning of Earth on its axis is called rotation |
| Revolution | The movement of one object around another |
| Orbit | Earth's path, or orbit, is a slightly elongated circle, or ellipse |
| Calender | A system of organizing time that defines the begenning, length , and divisions of the year |
| Solstice | Each of the these days is known as a solistice |
| Equinox | Each of these is known as an equinox, which means "equal night" |
| Gravity | Attracts all objects toward each other |
| Law of Universal Gravitation | States that every object in the universe attracts every other object |
| Mass | The amount of matter in an object |
| Weight | The measure of the force of gravity on an object |
| Inertia | The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion |
| Newton's First Law of Motion | States that an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion with a constant speed and direction unless acted on by a force |
| Phase | The different shapes of the moon ou see form the Earth |
| Eclipse | When an object in space comes between the sun and a third object, it casts a shadow on that object |
| Solar Eclipse | When the moon passes directly betwenn the Earth and the sun, blocking sunlight form Earth. |
| Umbra | The very darkest part of the moon's shadow |
| Penumbra | The larger part of the shadow |
| Lunar Eclipse | Occurs at a full moon when Earth is directly between the moon and the sun. |
| Tide | The rise and fall of ocean water that occurs every 12.5 hours or so. |
| Spring Tide | The tide with the greatest difference between consecutive low and high tides |
| Neap Tide | The tide with the least difference between consecutive low and high tides |
| Crater | A large round pit caused by the impact of a meteoroid. |
| Maria | Dark, flat areas on the moon's surface formed from huge ancient lava flows |
| Meteoroid | A meteoroid that passed through the atmosphere and hits Earth's surface |
