Unit 3
Lesson 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| atom | the smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still be the same element |
| electron | negatively charged particles that move around the nucleus |
| nucleus | a small, dense center that has a positive charge and is surrounded by moving electrons |
| proton | a positively charged particle in the nucleus |
| neutron | uncharged particles in the nucleus |
| electron cloud | the electrons don't have an exact speed that they move at so scientists think that they are in an electron cloud |
| atomic number | the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom |
| mass number | the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus |
| Periodic table | An arrangement of the elements in order of their atomic numbers such that elements with similar properties fall in the same column, or group |
| Chemical symbol | An abbreviation for the chemical's name |
| Average atomic mass | The weighted average of the masses of all the naturally occurring isotopes of that element |
| Metals | Elements that are shiny and conduct heat and electricity well |
| Nonmetals | Poor conductors of heat and electricity |
| Metalloids | Elements that have some properties of metals and some properties of nonmetals |
| Group | Each vertical column of elements on the periodic table |
| Period | Each horizontal row of elements on the periodic table |
| chemical bond | an interaction that holds atoms or ions together |
| valence electron | electrons found in the outermost energy level of an atom |
| ion | a particle with a positive or negative charge |
| ionic bond | a force that brings oppositely charge ions together |
| covalent bond | forms when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons |
| molecule | a group of atoms held together by chemical bonds |
| metallic bond | forms between metal atoms when their outermost energy levels overlap |
